Since more and more items are becoming tagged with RFID tags, this technology is now embedded in passports and credit cards, replacing bar codes on products. Some people have concerns about how the information will be used by corporations or governments to help track personal items such as ID cards. However, these fears can be mitigated by the act of constructing something that shields the RFID tag from being read without permission. For example, a thin piece of aluminum foil can be laminated over an item and hide the tag entirely.
Step 1
Using newspaper or aluminum foil strips, cut a 20-by-22-centimeter rectangle. Rip 22 centimeters of duct tape and cover one side of the sheet, creating a rectangle with overlapping strips. Trim the sheet to 17 by 21 centimeters.
Step 2
Unroll the tape so that it covers 21 centimeters. Then make a mark on the tape at 21 centimeters. Fold the tape in half so that the raw end is even with the 21 centimeter mark. Line up the two halves so there’s no sticky parts visible. Cut at this mark where they meet. Repeat until you’ve covered 6 strips, then trim of any raw edges to 10 centimeters long.
Step 3
Take three of the strips and lay them with their long edges essentially overlapping. Fold the strip that is underneath in half and place a piece of tape on the back to secure it. Then continue this folding process with the strip at the top and bottom, using a piece of tape to prevent cards from sticking to the seam. Finally, repeat this folding process with both sections of the 3-section strips.
Step 4
The first step to making a wallet is to create a long fold in the large sheet of foil you created earlier. Fold the foil so that edge of one half is 1 centimeter longer than the other half. Now place one row of credit card pockets along the left edge of the folded state, while overlapping by 1 centimeter. Cut an 11-centimeter piece of duct tape and lay it on top of the left edge of the wallet, while also covering both sides. Take care to overlap this piece as well. Then unfold the rest of this piece and make sure you trim off any excess at the edges before folding it again onto itself for a layer over your layers work as well. Do this for every row on both ends when folding and cutting your duct tape tabs: left side same as right side
Step 5
With the circular credit card pockets on the front of your wallet facing you, take a 10 centimeter length of duct tape and put it in the center, overlapping both rows. Fold the bottom piece over to the outside, and roll up the top piece to fit inside of the billfold.
Step 6
Cut a 24 centimeter (half a yard) length of duct tape and place it across the bottom 2 centimeters of your wallet to seal the bottoms of the credit card pockets. Fold the rest of the piece over onto the outside of the wallet. Trim as necessary. Make a small cut at both corners of each credit card pocket so they will slide easily in and out. Cover any exposed sticky edges with more tape.
